What Happened on April 25, 1999?

April 25 is an anniversary date in the Falun Dafa community. On April 25, 1999 approximately 10,000 Falun Dafa practitioners took the brave initiative to come together at the Central Appeals Office in Beijing. What was their motivation?

Mainly, to request an end to the unlawful detention of Falun Dafa Practitioners in Tianjin, something that never happened before. They also sought to request an end to the harassment of Falun Dafa practitioners around the country as well as the end of restrictions on publishing the books of Falun Gong.

Practitioners were able to present their request to Beijing officials and their request was met; Tianjin practitioners were released from prison on that day. They ended the gathering as they started it, peacefully and orderly.

It was an event to be remembered as a celebration of bravery and justice. However, it would not be the end of the story.

July 20, 1999 – Chinese Communist Party Officials Launch the Persecution Against Falun Gong

Three months later, on July 20 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership launched a nationwide persecution campaign against Falun Dafa practitioners. For a group of people who practice Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, this event marks the beginning of a long test to their tolerance and compassion.

Practitioners witnessed in forbearance how the CCP widely used the power of the media to misrepresent their appeal on April 25 as a provocative protest against the Chinese government, and used this excuse to justify launching their persecution against Falun Dafa.

This persecution still continues to this day, even past the recent 22nd anniversary of the April 25 event (April 25, 2021).

A Peaceful Call to End the Persecution of Falun Dafa in China

In recognition of all practitioners of Falun Dafa who suffered or were killed during nearly 22 years of persecution by the Chinese Communist Party, Falun Dafa practitioners paraded through the streets of Flushing in New York on April 18, 2021.

They held a candlelight vigil in front of the Chinese Consulate that same night. Around the world, practitioners of Falun Dafa have been outside every year on this date, trying to awaken people to truth and get attention from the world outside of China in order to stop this crime.
