Category Anger & Resentment

Some anger arrives before you've decided anything. You hear yourself shouting, or you replay an old hurt for the hundredth time, and afterward you feel worse than before.

The people in these stories know that feeling. A man from a family that yelled, whose temper cost him the woman he loved. A father who kept score at the kitchen sink. A mother who lived by one rule: if anyone wronged her, she wronged them worse. Each slowly found a way to set some of it down, and none of them did it overnight.

These are their own accounts, not formulas or promises. If anger or an old hurt has been with you for a long time, we hope they let you feel a little less alone.

Can you really let go of anger?

Nobody can promise that. What these stories show is that anger did not have to be held down by force for something to change. The people in them still slipped sometimes, and over time the old reaction loosened its grip.
